The Bible has a sober and realistic perspective on suffering that includes chronic pain. It affirms the unfathomableness and tragedy of suffering and its often staggering weight. It also makes clear that God’s ways are not our ways, and that while He does sometimes bring about miraculous physical healing, there are many times that He does not. When the miracle we long for does not happen, we are often left with more questions than answers, trying to make sense of what is happening to us.
Sadly, we tend to live in a “fix-it” society, and often this is also found in the body of Christ, the church. However, it is curious that the Bible has so much more to say about suffering than it does about physical healing. We read time and time again how God uses all things to His purpose (Romans 8:28). Most importantly, we discover that no matter what we are dealing with the Lord is there, and He is our strength, our refuge, and our source of sustenance through His Living Waters.
He sees, He hears, He knows, He understands, and YOU are inscribed on the palms of His hands.
“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb?
Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are continually before me.” Isaiah 49:15-16
